Undergraduate researchers presented in the SHAPE session

As part of our outreach initiative, our undergraduate researchers hosted a poster session to local high schoolers partaking in the SHAPE session. SHAPE is a summer program geared towards local students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). On the high schoolers’ final day of SHAPE, researchers at Columbia University collaborated and hosted a poster-session for high schoolers to gain further insights in STEM.

Our ROAR lab undergraduate researchers, Mikhail Karasev, Chola Kondeti, and Young Jae Ryu, demonstrated two of our papers to high schoolers. Mikhail and Chola presented “A novel assist-as needed control method to guide pelvic trajectory for gait rehabilitation” by Jiyeon Kang and Dr. Vineet Vashista; and Young Jae presented the “Kinematic Design of a Dynamic Brace for Measurement of Head/Neck Motion” by Haohan Zhang. In addition, our undergraduate researchers talked about their respective contributions to the lab. Most importantly, our undergraduate researchers were able to share their experiences and offer advices on pursuing engineering to the SHAPE participants.  

ROAR lab is dedicated to engagement with local community and outreach to under-represented youths in engineering. We hope that through outreach opportunities such as our involvement with SHAPE, we can inspire more youths from all backgrounds to become future engineers.
